Happy Halloween! Here’s a word from Model Student writer, Jake Bell!

“You’re reading a story six years in the making… kind of. If you’ve clicked on the ABOUT link for this site, you know Joe and I worked together briefly at Atomic Comics. Another of our coworkers, Patrick Thorpe, is now an editor at Dark Horse Comics.

One of Patrick’s first jobs there was assisting on a horror anthology book called–to the best of my recollection–CREEPY. Yes, I could probably go look it up with about 20 seconds of effort, but I know myself well enough to know that search will lead to another, which will lead me to click on something else, which will inspire a stupid Twitter joke I want to make, which will lead to me justifying my stupid Twitter joke to someone who takes it the wrong way, which will upset me enough that I’ll get up from the computer to pour a drink and calm down, which will take me past the Playstation, which will remind me Assassins Creed 3 is out today and I still haven’t finished 2, which will prompt me to sit down and play, which I will keep doing until around midnight, at which point I’ll need to go to bed and I’ll never have finished this intro and Joe won’t be able to post the comic.

So, I think it was called CREEPY, and even if it wasn’t, let’s go with that before things get all “If You Give a Mouse a Cookie” in here.

I wrote KNOCK KNOCK and Joe did some rough sketch layouts for it. Patrick’s boss liked it, but for one reason or another, it never saw print. I recall three issues in a row being told it was the number one story on the reject pile. If there were three stories in the next issue, KNOCK KNOCK was #4!

CREEPY got cancelled, Joe went to the Kubert School, I wrote a series of kids’ books, and, last February, Joe contacted me about scripting MODEL STUDENT for him. I agreed, but on one term:

You will draw a finished version of KNOCK KNOCK for us to post on the site for Halloween.

And here it is! Now, if you like this, why don’t you go ahead and read MODEL STUDENT as long as you’re here? Click here to start at the beginning of issue #1, and come back here November 20th for the first page launch of issue #2. Or, if you’d prefer, you can download a CBZ version of MODEL STUDENT #1 for the low, low price of whatever you want to pay. Would we like you to donate a dollar? Sure! Would we settle for a quarter? Why not? Would we be willing to take $20? You betcha! Can you just download the whole thing, read it, make copies for your friends and neighbors, and never give us one red cent? Of course you can! You’d be kind of a dick, but you could do it.

And please, comment here about KNOCK KNOCK and MODEL STUDENT. Go forth and tweet this and Facebook that. Rather than make copies for your friends and family, send them here to get their own free copies! Spread the word and Happy Halloween!”
